The Benefits of Collaborative Writing

Writing is usually a solo sport. You sit alone with your thoughts, your keyboard, and the blinking cursor. But what if it could be more like a game? More like improv? More like… a story that surprises you?

That’s what collaborative writing offers — and it’s why more and more writers are giving it a try.

Sometimes we writers get stuck. Sometimes we just get bored. Sometimes the plot gets too lost and the story gets abandoned altogether. Forgotten. Virtual cobwebs around the .docx. Notebooks plopped in random drawers to gather dust. How many times have you gotten one, two, even twenty chapters in and then flushed it? Or, on the flip side, how many times have you tried to summon enough brain cells to begin a story and… nothing? Zero ideas… just that infernal blinking cursor.

That’s the benefit of collaborative writing. When you write with others, a fresh perspective can resurrect a lost story. Someone might take your lonely, half-formed character and turn them… into a super spy. Suddenly, it’s alive again. You’re back in the game. And, if original ideas are in short supply, you can get a jump start by adding to a story already in motion.

When you create a story with others, you don’t need to know what the next chapter will be. Just write the moment that sparked it all — the one that lives in your head — and let it go. People could chime in with all sorts of wild ideas of where your story should go next. With variety like that, it’s hard to get bored. And there’s no fear of the plot dying, because someone else will pick it up. Then you become the reader of your own story. It’s like that book you can’t put down — but your characters are the ones in the lead.

And, when it’s finished, it feels like something you discovered as much as you wrote.

Meet Go Write Me

If that sounds exciting — strange, fun, unexpected — check out a project I’ve been working on called Go Write Me.

Go Write Me is where forgotten stories get a second life. It’s how to get unstuck as a writer. It’s how to revive your unfinished novel. And it’s a space to write the next chapter of someone else’s tale.

No judgment. No pressure. No profiles. No usernames, even. Just stories. Just creating.
